Our D.C.-area car accident attorneys recently learned of a Hyattsville, Maryland car accident that tragically claimed the lives of two motorists and injured a third. The accident occurred during the early morning hours of November 1 at the intersection of Riggs Road and Drexel Street.
According to accident reports, Jose Cuevas Raudes, 38, and Dilcia Gutierrez Vasquez, 33, were traveling on Drexel Street, preparing to turn onto Riggs Road when the Toyota Camry they were riding in was struck by another vehicle traveling southbound on Riggs Road.
Witness reports state that the driver of the Acura, traveling south on Riggs Road, was speeding excessively when approaching the intersection. The man driving the Acura, who was not immediately identified, reportedly lost control of his vehicle, crossing into the northbound lane of Riggs Road, colliding with the driver’s side of the Camry.
Accounts state that Cuevas Raudes stopped at the intersection and waited for the light to turn green before proceeding to right into the northbound lanes of Riggs. Authorities have confirmed that speed was a contributing factor in causing the accident.
Police stated that Mr. Cuevas Raudes, the driver of the Toyota Camry, died at the scene. One eyewitness to the crash, who is employed as a nursing assistant, attempted CPR on Ms. Gutierrez Vasquez, the female passenger in the Camry. She was later taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The unnamed driver of the Acura was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Neighbors who live near the accident scene stated that the sound from the accident indicated its severity. A witness at the scene also shared that the male driver seemed to have suffered multiple, severe head injuries in the car accident.
At Lewis & Tompkins, our family of attorneys would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the victims of this tragic Hyattsville car accident.
