One area man was killed in a Hyattsville pedestrian accident on January 13, when a woman lost control of her vehicle, striking him before crashing through a storefront window.
The victim in the accident was identified as Jose Martin Huaman, 24, of Hyattsville. Some reports have said that he was on his way to work around 7:00 a.m. when the accident occurred. The unidentified woman, who was described as being in her 40s, was reportedly driving a Ford minivan on Route 1/Rhode Island Avenue when she drove over the curb, striking the man, and then continued on into the storefront window.
Investigators on the scene stated that early reports found that the woman hit an icy patch on the road, which caused the accident to occur. No other information has been provided about the woman’s speed, possible distractions, or additional factors that could have contributed to the accident.
Both the driver and the victim were transported to area hospitals to receive treatment for their injuries. According to Officer Nicole Hubbard, a spokeswoman with the Prince George’s County police, the victim later died at the hospital due to the injuries he sustained. The driver suffered minor injuries during the crash.
The minivan caused damage to an interior design shop (ID Design Collective), located at 4814 Rhode Island Avenue, and to a neighboring bail bonds business..
According to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, crews were dispatched to the area following the accident to repair a water main break. On the WSSC website, a statement made available warned the public that the extreme cold weather in recent days and weeks has caused a large number of water main breaks and leaks in the area.
In the days immediately following the accident, no charges had been filed in the case.
We’d like to extend our deepest condolences, and hopes for healing and comfort to the loved ones grieving the loss of Jose Martin Huaman during this difficult time. We’d also like to encourage all drivers to take extra care when traveling on the roadways in winter weather. Changing temperatures and the harsh elements can make the roadways slick and dangerous for motorists and their vehicles. Slowing down is one simple step to help prevent accidents like this one from happening in Hyattsville’s dangerous winter road conditions.
